Gothic fashion styles are not only some of the easiest to recognize, but they are also some of the most creative, fun and interesting. Many are dark, antiquated and mysterious while a style such as Cyber Gothic pulls from futuristic images. The looks take their influences from a variety of sources, namely the Victorian era, the Elizabethan era, and the Punk Rock era. Here are examples of different Gothic fashion styles:
The Traditional Gothic fashion style is black hair, dark eyeliner, black nail polish, and black clothing. For example, a woman may sport jet black hair, heavy black eyeliner, a little PVC black dress, black fishnet stockings, black military style boots, and black nail polish.
Romantic or Victorian Gothic
This style evokes images of yesteryear, although the color is almost always black, with perhaps a maroon or another dark color thrown in. For example, a woman in this style may wear her hair swept up and topped with a black lacy hat. She may wear a long black flowing lacy gown complete with a corset, long black gloves, and black high-heel boots.
Victorian Steampunk Gothic
This style is similar to the Romantic or Victorian Gothic, but with a distinct difference. It’s a mixture of Victorian and the Industrial Revolution with post-apocalyptic influences. It is a romantic style but one influenced by scientists and explorers. A woman dressed in a Victorian Steampunk Gothic style may wear a black bowl hat and sunglasses with round lenses and wire-mesh side-shields. She may wear big brass earrings, a see-thru black top with a black corset. With the corset is a collection of big dark brown belts with brass buckles and on one of the belts is a holster and a gun. She teams it with a frilly black skirt and black biker boots.
The Cyber Gothic style includes black, of course, but here is where you’ll see neon colors, such as bright neon green or bright neon pink. When you consider Victorian Goths, for example, the focus is on the past. But with Cyber Goths, the focus is on the future – and that is the distant future. So the Cyber Gothic style is futuristic, sci-fi, wild and bizarre. A woman who wears a Cyber Goth creation may have long neon blue dreadlocks, heavy and creative eye makeup and adornments with wild contact lenses, black lipstick or even a black gas mask, a black corset with a touch of blue neon, a blue neon tutu skirt, and black platform boots with torn black fishnet stockings.
Another Gothic style is the Hippie Gothic. As you can imagine, this style evokes images of the 1960s hippie scene. Once again, black dominates the color scheme, but with variations. A woman who dresses in a Hippie Gothic style may wear her hair long, straight and black. She may wear a dark flowery headband around her head. She wears glasses with round lenses, and a straight, long black flowing dress with a big silver cross necklace dangling from her neck.
What’s so fun about the different Gothic fashion styles is how creative and fun they are. Although all dominated by the color black, the variations in the styles can take the color in many different avenues.
